Abstract:

This paper aims to analyze participation‘s levels in small farmers addressing this issue through social capital approach. In order to reach this objective, a set of information was collected from several organizations which are supported by PRODESAL program in Coihueco (Biobio Region). An Ordered Probit model was used to estimate the factors that determine participation’s levels. Econometric results point out that higher schooling levels determine higher participation’s levels which could be linked with social and negotiation skills. Moreover, it was found that individuals whose family participates in organizations, families that incur in higher monthly expenses and who show fewer tendencies to mobility, have a higher probability to participate within their organizations. Finally, trust in other organization members, in the government management and in the organization’s leaders, as well as perception that decisions that are taken in meetings are considered by the authorities, have positive effects in participation’s levels.
